Somersworth Veterans Memorial
Somersworth, NH
The City of Somersworth chose Ironwood to design a new memorial to its veterans. The site, an existing park adjacent to the city’s history museum, slopes steeply toward the Salmon Falls River. Creating an accessible gathering place while maintaining pedestrian circulation through the park presented a significant design challenge. The new memorial location needed to accommodate large crowds and provide a comfortable public park space for people to enjoy.
The focal point of the design is five illuminated granite monuments, one for each service branch standing tall against the planted hillside backdrop and flagpole. Additional memorial elements include paved areas for two relocated war monuments and a 25 foot-long engraved granite bench and park signage. The paved plaza and curved walkway incorporate bricks that have been engraved with the names, branches, and service dates of veterans.
